Sample assessment
The diamond feed already had a measured fine-powder distribution. The useful selection question is a small median reduction with controlled abrasive wear. The laboratory test record documents this preparation only; applying the method to another batch requires a matched trial.
Recorded objective
Reach D50 below 6.8 µm.
Equipment and selection
The recorded planetary machine is XQM. The corresponding TENCAN family is the Vertical square planetary ball mill. The jar volume identifies the test container and does not establish an exact machine variant or production capacity. Equipment association follows the recorded machine designation.
Test setup
| Recorded planetary machine | XQM |
|---|---|
| Documented setup | 500 mL cemented-carbide jar and carbide balls; standard media loading; 186 g powder; dry milling; speed setting 450. |
| Recorded operating cycle | Run 5 / pause 1; units not stated in mode field |
Speed values are reproduced as recorded settings. A rotational unit and planetary-disc versus jar-speed basis are not stated, so these numbers are not labelled rpm.
Recorded procedure and results
The feed measured D50 = 7.65 µm and D90 = 11.47 µm. After 30 minutes, D50 = 6.17 µm and D90 = 9.03 µm. A follow-up XQM run used 185 g in the same nominal jar material and volume, with the 15 mm and 12 mm balls removed from the standard mix. Samples were taken at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 minutes; no size values are supplied for these samples.
Measured after 30 minutes in the standard carbide arrangement; later short samples have no reported size values.
Interpretation
The measured 30-minute run met the stated median-size threshold. The shorter follow-up sampling schedule provides no evidence that the threshold was reached sooner.
Practical precautions
Control carbide wear and contamination when purity matters. Keep the modified ball mix separate from the standard mix when comparing the 30-minute result with later short trials.
TENCAN alternatives to evaluate
For follow-up comparison, consider the TENCAN Laboratory Full-Directional Planetary Ball Mill. For diamond micropowder, a matched QXQM trial can test whether changing orientation affects the required diamond median without increasing wear. Keep sample mass, media and sampling times controlled. This is a proposed comparison; the test record does not demonstrate a superior result for that alternative. Confirm jar compatibility and the permitted complete loaded mass before selecting a configuration.
Procedure records XQM; related product is the corresponding tested machine family. Exact variant is not inferred from jar size.
